I am Not The Target Audience For The Playstation 5

Yet, here I am with this thing that looks like a giant router! I bought the PS5 because I really really REALLY want to play Grand Theft Auto 6 when it releases next year. I know that is a terrible reason to drop 500 dollars on a box which is objectively worse than my existing devices. I have no good excuse, that is genuinely why I bought it... just to bend over backwards for mega corporations worth billions of dollars.

My Initial Frustrations With The Thing.

I haven't purchased a Playstation since the PS3 so it was a bit of a rude awakening to see how much worse the UI got. Every profile on the console needs its own PSN account. The homescreen has a lot of advertisements tacked onto it with no way of getting rid of them. There is no way to customize the UI.

One of the first things I wanted to do with the PS5 was stream it to my computer just so its easier to look at, but the PS5 is not a very capable device when it comes to streaming. The stream compression looks horrendous and the input delay is too high. Also there is very very limited support for streaming the controller. If you have a controller connected to your device that is receiving the stream, you do not get 90% of the features of the controller. No haptics, no speaker, no touchpad. Also, if you want to connect the controller straight to the PS5 while streaming, you need to make a second PSN account just for streaming. For whatever reason, the stream counts as its own controller, so it disconnects your existing controller. Once you've figured that out, have fun with the permanent UI message at the top of the screen "Remote Play Connected."

Contacting Support

Because I wanted to make a second account for streaming, I tried to get my old PS3 account back.. but I have lost the password and don't remember any of the security questions. Sony has by far the worse customer support of any company that I've had to interact with. There is absolutely no way to contact a real person through their website. If I had the ability to contact support, I could've presented them with a plethora of information which could've proved that I owned that old account. I still have that old PS3 and all the games with it, I even have old Sony emails from 10~ years ago. I thought HTC was the worse company I've had to contact support for, but Sony takes it to a whole other level.

Buying Games

So, everyone jokes about the PS5 having no games but that is far from the truth. The PS5 has every game you'd want (probably,) but if you already have another platform to play those games on, there is no real reason to buy them on the PS5. I looked through the PS5 store and I would find a game, then I'd realize that I should just buy the PC version of the game. A lot of games I wanted to buy were on Unreal Engine, because of that, I only want them on PC so I can use Praydog's UEVR injector with them.

So far, the only two game I've purchased is Dreams and Grand Theft Auto 5. Dreams is the successor to Little Big Planet, my favorite game on the PS3. Dreams is one of the few games which are exclusive to the Playstation consoles. Dreams is essentially a game engine for people to make their own little games and share games. Besides that, I have been playing Spiderman 2 because it came with the console. I haven't gotten GTA5 yet, I purchased it on eBay today. I have GTA5 on PC and have played it extensively there, but the price for a second hand copy wasn't too bad. I also just want to see the lousy Expanded and Enhanced edition.

PS5 as a Media Center

The PS5 does not play music CDs like its predecessors :((((. For watching streaming services, the PS5 works pretty well for that... Besides YouTube having notably more advertisements than if I were to watch from a web browser. If I bothered, I could make a much better media center with Linux and Plasma Bigscreen.

So Who is This For?

The PS5 is for people who want a quality console experience and can't be bothered to operate a computer. If you want something that can be turned on and just works, the PS5 does that. I totally get why someone would find that appealing over all the complications and intricacies of playing a game on PC.

Because I've been using computers for years and years and years, the PS5 does not fufill my needs for what a gaming machine is meant to do. I will be glad that I have it once GTA6 comes out, but in the mean time, I'm probably just going to finish Spiderman 2 then let it collect dust.

Why Are Second Hand PS5s so Sketchy?

Because I have enough trust in the PS5 to work, even if it was used by someone else, I originally went looking for a second hand one to save a couple bucks. But every listing seems to have a stolen PS5. The one house that I showed up to for their PS5, they did not tell me it was PSN banned. I had to check right there on the spot. When I saw the PSN ban screen, the seller was like "oh I have like 4 other ones, here I'll go get another one." Like???? Okay, I guess you just have a bunch of totally not stolen stuff. Then the guy tried to upsell me because he wanted to show me a slim model??? Why on Earth would I pay full price for a sketchy second hand slim?

In the end, I bit the bullet and bought a full priced brand new PS5 Slim with an optical drive.

Lastly

Why does the PS5 has such awkward keyboard support?!?!? The UI cannot be operated with a keyboard, but select games work with it. You would think that just about everything(within reason) would have support with keyboards.

One other thing I just remembered: Why would they put liquid metal in the PS5? Your PS5 will self destruct if left in its vertical position.
