About me

Haiiii my name is Jodie, I am a 3D artist who has a wide range of nerdy interest:

3D Art

Ever since 2020 and the initial release of Blender 2.8, I have been encapsulated by 3D art. I have always wanted a creative medium but nothing ever seemed to stick. Blender came to me really easily as it doesn't require the natural flow of more traditional art. I have dyspraxia which means I lack fine motorskills. Drawing 2D art has always been a struggle for me but I've always wanted to create things. 3D has given me a way to create things.

As of now, I have familarized myself with Blender 3D, Maya, and Substance Painter. I've used these tools to make money and slowly build a portfolio for myself. I hope to start a career within 3D. It is just a shame that a lot of the industry standard software is old, expensive, and a total scam.

Video Games

For as long as I can remember, I have played video games. I used to play games on an Xbox 360 before getting my first computer. I struggle to enjoy playing console games as I enjoy the freedom of playing through a computer. I mod and tinker with just about every game I enjoy. I like hosting servers for my friends and participating in communities.

Some of my favorite games in no particular order:

Virtual Reality

I first started my never ending hyperfixation on virtual reality back when the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 was all there really was for modern VR. The thought of having a way to escape into other worlds was really appealing to me; that is what I thought at first, but now VR is nothing more than another peripheral to me. I love when VR games and experiences enable you to do things which you wouldn't be able to do with a regular keyboard and mouse. Despite what I want, it seems like most VR applications and games lean towards comfort and comforming to what we already do in flatscreen experiences. I want to see more games like BONEWORKS and Half-Life:Alyx

I also see the other use cases for virtual reality outside of video games. The Apple Vision Pro is essentially a 3D computer desktop. I am surprised that we haven't really seen any good 3D modelling tools built on virtual reality yet, there are tools that exist, but a lot of them fall short. Controlling your computer with 6 degrees of freedom should create for faster workflows and flexible environments.

3D Printing

I am fairly new to 3D printing but I have used it to make custom parts for all of my nieche problems. So far, I have designed a travel cover for my Steam Deck and various other parts to mount pieces to things. I fixed my old sim wheel by 3D printing little parts to keep things in place. I hope to get the Steam Deck travel cover to a point where I would feel good sharing the design for others.

Space

The masive abyss we call space is so scary, but learning about how we explore and learn about our environment is important to me. I have a very very very basic grasp on oribtal mechanics and have spent countless hours building rockets in Kerbal Space Program.

Linux

Much like everyone else, my distaste for Microsoft and their monopolistic operating system is ever growing. Over time, I have learned a little bit about operating Linux. I still use Windows on my big desktop for compatibility reasons, but on my laptop, I find using Linux is much more comfortable. Not being nagged with advertisements, spyware, and things I never asked for is nice. It is amazing that there are so many people passionately working on Linux to make it a confident operating system. Who would've guessed that the free OS would have less advertisements and strings attached?
